Released in 1983, the same year that the MIDI protocol was invented, the Roland Jupiter 6 was one of the first synthesizers to have MIDI built in and was Roland's first MIDI synthesizer. Another monster sized analog beast from Roland that, like it's big brother Jupiter 8 weights a whopping 35 pounds. The Jupiter 6 is a scaled down version of the Jupiter 8 in terms of programming features and polyphony. However the Jupiter 6 has some major improvements such as the added MIDI control and stable oscillators that did not go out of tune so easily as did many other analog synths produced during the time. The Roland Jupiter's all have an amazing sound due in part to classic analog Roland technology in their filters, modulation capabilities and 12 analog oscillators at 2 per voice and the Jupiter 6 is no different. It's also very easy to program via front panel sliders, knobs and buttons.
Each Jupiter 6 voice consists of two voltage controlled oscillators, a multi mode filter, two ADSR envelopes, and LFO. The Jupiter also has a second LFO which is shared by all six voices. There are two separate synthesizer boards found inside the Jupiter. A two voice unit and a four voice unit which are under separate control and allows for the splits.
Being that this was Roland's first synthesizer with MIDI, all the MIDI features are very basic. Note on/off, auto tune command, and patch selection. There is no system exclusive so you could not load in sounds via MIDI. The Jupiter powers up in omni mode but it will respond to poly mode on/omni off command via MIDI and the unit responds to channel 1 (in split in will respond to channels 1 and 2). Version 6.0 of the operating system (the latest version) allows you to choose what channel the JP6 will transmit and receive on. Versions below will only respond and transmit on channel 1. Only patches may be changed via midi not individual tones.
Synthcom Systems produces the Europa upgrade for the Jupiter 6 which gives it an up-to-date and comprehensive MIDI implementation. All parameters are controllable via Continuous Controllers or SysEx. Europa also features an extensive arpeggiator which will sync to MIDI clock with programmable clock divisors and rhythms, and has about 50 more playback variations than the JP-6's original Up, Down, Up/Down, and Down/Up. A Europacized Jupiter 6 is a thoroughly modern synth with a classic sound.
Our Jupiter 6 sounds are available in Europa Sysex format or as a WAV file. To load the WAV file, just connect your computer audio output to your Jupiter-6 cassette interface and you can load in the sounds the same way you would from a cassette tape. The files will open in any program that plays .WAV files. Our sounds are also compatible with the Europa upgrade as a system exclusive file. The WAV and sysex files can be downloaded via our free download delivery. Our Jupiter 6 patches will also get you back in business if your Jupiter-6 battery has died and you lost all the sounds in the memory. If you have any questions please contact us via phone or e-mail.
Note: All patches must be set to whole mode. All sounds are in the patch program section, not patch preset. Patch preset button must be turned off. Patches in unison modehave * next to the name. We recommend using glissando during lead type patches.
